We are very excited to announce the opening of Rib, a new exhibition space in Rotterdam. You are cordially invited to Rib’s launching exhibition 4 works, 3 artists, one projection, with works by Christoph Meier/Axel Stockburger and Steve Van den Bosch.
Steve Van den Bosch will present two works, Above my head, from the floor up, 2015 and Bag (still), 2008. The works specifically focus on the dynamics of revealing and concealing in the relation between space, object, and viewer as an irreversible condition of any given exhibition space.
Christoph Meier and Axel Stockburger (AT) will present their film Il Grande Silenzio, 2014. Meier and Stockburger used art space Ve.Sch in Vienna as a filmset, shooting a staged exhibition opening. They asked their artist colleagues to act and to contribute with a simulated artwork as prop. Initially Il Grande Silenzio was destined to become a massive youtube hit, with its black humour and punk attitude and lots of blood and fun. “This however had to fail because none of us had any money left to buy the necessary hits from Asian ‘Like’-farms.”
Steve Van den Bosch’s work has been described as balancing “between invisibility and straight materiality”. His often minimal works are concerned with the artwork’s periphery. Van den Bosch (BE) graduated from the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam in 2007. Recent solo exhibitions include No Notion of None (2013) and Quote Unquote (2011) both at galerie van der Mieden, Antwerp, and group exhibitions 50 Days at Sea, Antwerp Pavilion, curated by Philippe Pirotte at the Shanghaï Biennale; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Kunsthalle Bern, Bern and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA. Born 1975, lives and works in Antwerp. At the moment, his work is part of The Corner Show, a group exhibition at Extra City, Antwerp.
Axel Stockburger employs global popular culture, such as computer games, and blockbuster films as a starting point for the production of his videos and text works. His work engages with novel forms of participatory and fan culture that have emerged with the transition from traditional mass media like TV and Film towards the Internet. Besides solo exhibitions (Secession, Vienna, Gallery Winiarcyk, Vienna, Organhaus Chongqing, Starkwhite, Auckland) he participated in numerous international group exhibitions (selection) 2015: 12th Havana Biennial; 2014: Quantitative Easing (for the street), KÖR, Graben Vienna; 2013: Glitch, Kunstraum Innsbruck; 2012: Rencontres Internationales Paris, Palais de Tokyo, Paris / Left & Right, Hong Studio, Beijing; 2011: Nothing in the World but Youth, Turner Contemporary, Kent/Jingshenfenxi, organhaus art space, Chongqing. Axel Stockburger graduated from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna in 1999 and holds a PhD from the University of the Arts, London. He lives and works in Vienna.
